The optic disc hemorrhage is more favorable to NAION.
Let's take a look at lower picture. I think that the optic disc swelling of optic neuritis is less flammable than that of NAION, thus, upper picture might be NAION.
To sum up, the differences between NAION and optic neuritis depend on my experience.
Favorable to NAION
- old age > 60 years
- no painful
- better color vision than visual loss
- Visual field test : altitudinal (more than 50%)
- optic disc hemorrhage (70%)
- no change of visual loss (50%)
Favorable to Optic neuritis
- middle aged women
- painful on ocular movement
- worse color vision than visual loss
- visual field test : diffuse, non-specific
- optic disc hemorrhage : unusual (5%)
- recovery of visual loss within 2 months
